You may be surprised at the quality found here. Fortunately, opting for free software to make music does not necessarily mean making big commitments.

In this summary of the free software for making music, we take tools that are suitable for beginners, as well as those most suitable for those who have more experience.

The selection covers Windows, macOS and Linux, so you will find something that will help you with your creative ventures regardless of the platform you are using.

Types of music making software:

BandLab Cakewalk:

Cakewalk, formerly known as Cakewalk SONAR, was one of the first digital audio workstations, but its owner Gibson stopped the development last year. Fortunately for music creators, BandLab, the cloud music creation platform, installed the software in February and made it available for free download.

Cakewalk is a complete types of music creation package, with creative tools and instruments for composing songs, advanced mixing and mastering tools, unlimited MIDI and audio tracks for your own recordings, and a complete set of editing tools.

Once you’re done, you can publish your work directly on SoundCloud, YouTube, Facebook and many other sites. It is a pity that it is only available for Windows 10 at this time, but we will be interested to see where BandLab Cakewalk leads in the future.

Klevgrand SyndtSphere:

Klevgrand may not be a familiar name, but the Stockholm-based creation company has certainly carved a name with a lot of fine sound instruments with some fairly esoteric interfaces.

SyndtSphere is no exception, and is one of the most accessible software synthesizers that exist. Loaded with more than 70 presets, the great fun here is the way you can transform between sounds using an ingenious sphere-shaped object in the center of the application.

The most experienced producers should not be discouraged by the beginner-friendly feeling; SyndtSphere has an impressive variety of lurking sounds. The unique transformation function allows a solid sound design like a rock, but you can find yourself playing with it for years before doing something.

AmpliTube Custom Shop:

IK Multimedia’s AmpliTube Custom Shop could be a reduced version of AmpliTube 4, but it’s still a fully functional guitar platform modeling application. This free version comes with 24 models that include a digital chromatic tuner, nine pedals, four amplifiers, five cabins, three microphones and two rack effects.

There are many things to cheer up any guitarist when recording directly on their laptop, among other things, the fact that IK Multimedia has secured official models of guitar amplifiers from giants like Fender, Ampeg, Orange, Mesa Boogie and many more.

The AmpliTube tones are authentic and there is an impressive level of customization available (including the choice of microphone and microphone location), but perhaps the biggest advantage is the Custom Shop feature.

Okay, at this point you will have to start disbursing some money if you want to expand your collection of amp models, pedals and cockpit simulators. However, the ‘test before buying’ scheme is welcome.

Types of music making software

Tracktion T7:

The people of Tracktion seem to have run into a rather astute business model by launching previous versions of their DAW for free, with nothing taken out.

The convention seems to be to make the version two iterations before the current one available for download without charge. You may not get all the latest features, but you will receive an update every time the company updates its flagship DAW, which it does almost annually. The latest version that has its price tag removed from your Tracktion T7.

Each section is scalable, so you can adjust it to your workflow and the bottom panel changes to show the parameters you have selected in another part of the screen.

Apple GarageBand:

Apple’s old digital audio workstation has come a long way since we first saw it in 2004, and although it still lacks a couple of key features (such as MIDI export and the ability to control external hardware through MIDI), GarageBand offers more than enough for you to leave.
